Little Melty

Project Type

Combat Robotics

Date

January 2023 - Present

Little Melty is a 3lb Melty Brain. When the original designer for the robot quit a week before competition I volunteered to keep the design work going. I did not have the time to make the changes that I would have wanted to to make it perfect all I had time to do was to make it work. I worked with the programmer of the robot who was the person with the vision, the parts that had already been manufactured, and the CAD that was given to me to design something that would work as fast as possible.
This was a new challenge for me as I am used to have long time lines and although I like working under crunch it it usual my vision that I am working to finish rather then 2 other peoples. Being flexible and talking to other experienced team members was key to getting the melty to work.
After several late nights and a whole lot of work we had something that might work. The evening before the event one of the motors caught fire during safety but it worked before doing so. The next morning rushed to finish repairing the damage and got the robot to pass safety.
Little Melty ended with a 1-2 record receiving its one win through forfeit, but the sole achievement of getting the robot past safety and in the arena at NHRL was something to be proud of for me and the 2 other people that were on the team at NHRL.
We hope to make drastic design changes based off of what we learned at NHRL and will be recruiting more mechanical team members to ensure that I have time to work on my main robot. I however plan to stay very involved with the design of this robot as I have fallen in love with it.
